Essence of Ayurveda

What Is Ayurveda?

The story of Ayurveda starts thousands of years before the new-age medicine provided scientific evidence for the body-mind connection. The sages of India developed this method of healing which continues to remain one of the most powerful and sophisticated forms of healing even today. More than it being a system of healing, Ayurveda is a science of life. (Ayur meaning Life and Veda- meaning the science of life). Ayurveda is an entire system that offers body the wisdom to stay vibrant and healthy while realizing their body’s potential.

There are two principles of Ayurveda:

  1. First, the mind and the body are connected
  2. Secondly, nothing in the world has more power to heal than one’s mind

Essence of Ayurveda:

  • Sovereignty from illness depends on one’s awareness, and upon bringing a balance between in life and extending this balance to the body. This process might sound complicated, but it isn’t. Meditation is one form of self-realisation where one enters the state of prolonged awareness and inner silence. Meditation helps in refreshing the mind and the body and in restoring balance.
  • Ayurveda says it is important to understand the mind-body type and the scientific needs one derives from it. It is a personalized methodology and helps in recognizing your mind-body needs and accordingly making choices about the exercise, diet, and supplements.
  • Eat a colourful and flavourful food: Aside from breathing, eating is the most vital body function. To keep the body healthy our food must be nourished. The ideal diet is consuming a variety of fresh foods that include the six Ayurveda tastes like sweet, salty, sour, spicy, astringent and bitter. Along with the tastes, it is important to fill the plate with a lot of colours. Foods that are coloured red, green, orange, purple and deep blue are front-runners in antioxidants and also contain the nutrients that enhance health.
  • Get abundant and restful sleep: Sleep is the nursemaid to humanity says Ayurveda. During sleep, the body rejuvenates and repairs itself. Lack of sleep disrupts the body’s unique balance. Human beings need at least 6-8 hours’ sleep, at the end of which one feels energized and refreshed. If you are tired and lazy after the sleep that means you haven’t had a sound sleep.
  • Ayurveda suggests each human live in tune with nature. Listen to your mind and your body and make choices that are in tune with the body. Our body has the power to express itself through the signals of comfort and discomfort if the body is sending a signal of emotional distress listen to it and make an alternate choice.
  • Lastly and most importantly Ayurveda teaches one to have a great digestion. It says it is important fully to metabolize the emotional, nutritional and sensory information of the body.

Ayurveda is much more than medicines and oils; it is a lifestyle change. It is about organizing things and not struggling to make them work your way. It says take life as it comes and be guided by its love. Ayurveda is widely used in Southern parts of India, especially in Chennai. Each ayurveda doctors in Chennai have a different approach in treatment.
